I absolutely love cats. I have been fortunate enough to have shared my life with 7 wonderful cats. They each have their own special personality, have all been quite affectionate and loving. I currently live with 2 cats and a dog. Those are “Tootsie’s” eyes above. She is always attached to me. I have always said that every cat deserves a home and that every home deserves a cat. Have you gotten Health Insurance for your Cat?

My cats have lived to ripe old ages of 19 and 20 years! During the last few years of their lives, they needed special health care. Ginger and Pumpkin, both had kidney disease, and they required special diets, and for me to give them every other day saline fluid IVS. This was actually quite easy for me to administer once I got used to giving them shots. Ginger was also diabetic first, so I had learned how easy it was to give insulin shots to her twice a day. Pumpkin’s kidney disease caused him to have high blood pressure, so I also had to give him high blood pressure medicine. Now, I have Arvo, who is about 14 years old. He is now also diabetic, and I give him insulin shots twice a day. Now, don’t go thinking that this is going beyond the call of cat guardianship duty. They were all quite happy and tolerated these processes quite well. The main problem is the EXPENSE of the meds and routine veterinary visits. I also have Tootsie, who is about 4 years old and she is currently quite healthy, so I am going to get her Pet Insurance before she reaches the same sort of expensive life stages. I have found this insurance plan that you might want to check out too, before your vet bills get too high.

Cats are really great companions and friends.

Wellness for your Aging Cat

Generally, a well-cared for house cat usually lives to be at least 15 years old. Ginger lived to be 20. and Pumpkin to 19 years. I have heard that some cats live to be well over 30!

There are things you can do, to provide your cat with the chance for the longest life possible. Have your cat spayed or neutered. Statistics show that fixed cats live longer, because this causes the cat to stay closer to home and be exposed to few dangerous situations and disease. Good nutrition is also important. Make sure that you are buying cat food that is appropriate for your cat’s age. Many commercial cat foods are not really that healthy for cats. This is especially true if they are high in magnesium, which is not good for cat’s urinary health. Ask your vet which foods are best for your cats needs..

As you cat ages, certain medical conditions may cause you to make special considerations for your cat. Examples include reduced tolerance to extreme temperatures, decreased sensory perception, susceptibility to infection, arthritis and joint stiffness, digestion problems, liver and kidney problems, weaker bones, cancer, muscle weakness, slow reaction, memory loss, high blood pressure, and irritability. As you can see, aging cats have many of the same problems as aging humans! For example, both Ginger and Arvo became diabetic, and I gave Ginger, and still give Arvo insulin shots every 12 hours. Ginger, Pumpkin, and Arvo all got kidney disease as they reached their high teen years. I fed special vet supplied KD cat food, and also gave Ginger and Pumpkin saline fluid IVs every couple of days. I did this for a few years right up until their old age related deaths. Many people do this for their cats, It is easier than you would think to administer the fluids. You inject at the back of their necks just under the loose skin, and the cats don’t seem to mind if you do it while they are eating.

Along with a good diet, promote healthy amounts to exercise in your cat. You can do this by playing with your cat every day. Toys and scratching posts, are great for encouraging your cat to exercise. Remember, cats may spend most the day sleeping, which is fine. If you are overly concerned, talk to your vet about your cat’s sleeping habits.

Preventative health care is important. Make sure that your cat has regular checkups with the vet to make sure everything is OK . You should also routinely brush your cat’s teeth. Monitor your cat for appetite changes, changing sleep habits, and unsafe water consumption. The key to graceful aging in a cat is an owner who is well involved in his or her life.
